Muldersdrift, on the West Rand is approximately 30 minutes from Johannesburg and Pretoria.

 

1896 Dr Leander Jameson was captured in Muldersdrift after the failed Jameson Raid. The raid was an attempt to capture Johannesburg from the Boers and allow Cecil John Rhodes to take over political power. For those who are interested in the South African - Anglo-Boer - War will find many interesting sites here.

Muldersdrift today is a peaceful suburb with outstanding accommodation for the tourist or businessmsn visitng this area. Many fine B&B and Self Catering accommodation establishments abound, as well as luxury lodges and spas. Muldersdrift is famous for the wedding and conference venues

 

Muldersdrift is part of the Crocodile Ramble, a tourist route that runs along the Crocodile River.

 

Tourists on this route can visit many places of interest such as the Cradle of Humankind- the place of important fossil discoveries which have cast light our ancestory.

 

The Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve houses over 600 head of game, including hippo, ostrich, springbok, wildebeest, buffalo and, of course, lion and rhino.

 

There are also excellent nurseries and herb gardens to be found in the Muldersdrift area.

 

 

Did You Know? Fossils found in the area show that man's earliest ancestors were roaming these plains. The fossils are between 2 and 4-million years old!

The Aloe Ridge Game Reserve is home to white rhino, buffalo, hippo and antelope.

 

Ngwenya Glass Village was named after a mountain in Swaziland that resembles a crocodile - "ngwenya" . Here one can see glass blowing Useful numbers:

 

Muldersdrift is well known as an arts and crafts centre. There are numerous art galleries and studios. The Lesedi Cultural Village, which is an open-air living museum where the traditions of the local people can be experienced is not to be missed. Visitors can also take a tour to the township of Atteridgeville, and experience township life - including visiting shebeens, listening to jazz and visiting a traditional healer.
